Customer Background

A medical device startup specializing in POCT (Point-of-Care Testing) equipment developed a new blood glucose and lipid tester, requiring the production of 10 sets of appearance prototypes for hospital clinical testing and CE certification photography.

Challenges

  • High aesthetic requirements: The prototype must match the final mass-produced product's appearance, including white matte paint, silk-screened logo, and transparent display window
  • Assembly accuracy: The housing consists of multiple parts such as top and bottom covers, buttons, and battery cover, with assembly gaps required to be within 0.1mm
  • Material requirements: Medical-grade ABS is required, with surfaces that can withstand alcohol disinfectant wiping
  • Tight deadline: Only 10 days until the clinical testing starts

Solutions

  • Process route: CNC machining of medical-grade ABS, as the quantity is small and the precision requirement is high, the mold duplication method could not meet the assembly tolerance
  • Surface treatment: After grinding, the housing was sprayed with medical-grade matte white paint, meeting biocompatibility requirements. The display window used PC transparent parts processed by CNC machining + polishing + UV coating, achieving a light transmittance of 92%. The logo and button symbols were silk-screened, resistant to alcohol wiping
  • Assembly verification: Assembly fixtures were made in advance to ensure all parts fit correctly before delivery

Results

  • Delivered 10 complete instrument housings on day 8, after which the customer assembled them and sent them to three Grade-A tertiary hospitals for clinical testing
  • Housing size pass rate was 100%, with all assembly gaps ≤0.1mm, and no defects such as orange peel or sagging on the surface
  • Helped the customer obtain clinical test data on time, smoothly advancing the CE registration process
  • The customer subsequently ordered 50 sets of small-batch housings for trial production
